Full Time: Manchester United 2-0 Leicester City

Manchester United kept their winning start to the season intact as Leicester City were eventually defeated, thanks to goals from substitutes Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini.

The away side thwarted most of our attacks and it looked like we had broken their resilience in the second half as Danny Simpson was adjudged to have handled inside the box. Kasper Schmeichel had other plans as he saved well from Romelu Lukaku’s spot kick.

Just when things looked set for a draw, Rashford came off the bench and lashed in before Fellaini kneed a cross from Lingard to make it two goals on the night.

We remain the only side with a 100% record in the Premier League this season and here’s how the players fared.

Manchester United Player Ratings

David de Gea – 8/10

De Gea kept up the good work by saving a close range shot in the 90th minute. This ensured we kept three clean sheets in a row. We seem virtually impenetrable.

Antonio Valencia – 7/10

Valencia put in a Valencia like performance once again. He was good while joining the attack and did well to thwart any attacks Leicester had from the right, even when they brought on Demarai Gray.

Eric Bailly – 7.5/10

Bailly was commanding in the heart of the defence and didn’t really give much to Jamie Vardy and Islam Slimani.

Phil Jones – 7.5/10

The English defender has had a bit of a resurgence in his career under Jose and once again had a great showing in the heart of the defence.

Daley Blind – 7/10

Blind did have a tough time defending Riyad Mahrez in the second half but the Dutch defender kept at it and ensured we kept a clean sheet.

Paul Pogba – 7.5/10

Pogba was on a shooting rampage but couldn’t get a goal in the game. The former Juventus star had six shots but he needs to improve his accuracy. There were a couple of lapses as he gave the ball away in dangerous positions but it didn’t really affect the result today.

Nemanja Matic – 7/10

Matic had a decent enough game and didn’t do much wrong in the middle of the park. There was a comical moment as he went to setup a teammate late in the second half and Jose had a blast at the former Chelsea midfielder for leaving a hole at the back.

Juan Mata – 7/10

The former Chelsea man was one of our bright sparks in the first half and had a goal ruled offside (rightly so). He was replaced in the 67th minute by Marcus Rashford as we were in search of the first goal of the game.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 7/10

Henrikh did pick up a yellow card for breaking up a dangerous looking Leicester attack. The Armenian was replaced after an average evening, with Marouane Fellaini coming on as the second substitute.

Anthony Martial – 7.5/10

Martial was another player that was not given a lot of change by the Leicester defence. The French attacker was replaced by Jesse Lingard as the final substitute by Jose.

Romelu Lukaku – 7/10

The big Belgian had the best chance of the game with the second half penalty but it was saved by Schmeichel. Try as he might, Lukaku just could not score but it didn’t really matter in the end.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford – 8/10

Another wonderful substitute by the boss as Rashford scored around 200 seconds after coming on during a corner.

Marouane Fellaini – 7.5/10

We seem to be blessed with subs scoring goals as Fellaini kneed one in from a Lingard cross late in the game to wrap up the points.

Jesse Lingard – 7.5/10

Lingard did his bit by helping in teeing up Fellaini after it seemed the chance had gone by, as he took too long on the ball in the Leicester box.
