Manchester United are in the driving seat for the signature of Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is recovering from a knee injury. The 35-year-old center forward could sign a deal as early as this month, according to The Daily Mail.

The giant forward suffered a serious knee injury in a Europa League tie against Anderlecht in April and was expected to be out of action until the end of this year.

He was released by the club back in June and was linked with moves to a number of clubs. However, Jose Mourinho indicated earlier this month that the Swede would be offered a new deal and that the club has started discussions.

Zlatan has been given permission to use the club’s facilities at Carrington to aid his rehabilitation, though he has no active contract. With his recovery thought to be progressing well, United now want to include Zlatan in their plans for the second half of the season.

Mourinho wants to enlist him for the knockout stages of the Champions League and the club is ready to offer terms and get his signature soon. It would be a short-term contract on a lesser financial package than what was offered to him last season but it would also include a coaching role once he hangs up his boots.

Mourinho’s team has enjoyed a great start to the season, notching up two consecutive 4-0 wins. With Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba in brilliant form, the Red Devils look to have addressed Zlatan’s absence perfectly.

However, the impact of the Swedish striker should be seen beyond the goals. Agreed, that he scored 17 Premier League goals last season but his experience will be handy in guiding youngsters like Marcus Rashford, which will do a world of good to their future.

United believe that they have the edge over their rivals in getting Zlatan sign the dotted line. Knee ligament injuries are generally severe on the players and delay the recovery period but it is Zlatan we are talking about, a player who loves defying the natural sequence of things.

Do not be surprised if he plays in the Christmas festive games for the Red Devils.
