Former Chelsea Defender Urges Antonio Conte To Keep Hold Of Midfield Maestro Amid Interests from Manchester United

Celestine Babayaro

Former Chelsea star Celestine Babayaro believes that Cesc Fabregas should reject any interest from the likes of Manchester United or AC Milan in order to stay at Stamford Bridge. He says that this would be the best option for all parties involved. Fabregas has not been a first-team regular since Antonio Conte took over from Jose Mourinho in the summer. The midfielder is once again finding himself regularly on the bench, just as he did at Barcelona towards the end of his time at the Camp Nou. As a result, speculation has been rife that the player may seek a move in the summer.

There is no shortage of interest in the Spaniard with Manchester United and AC Milan reportedly ready to make a £25 million offer. Selling him at this price would represent an excellent financial decision considering that Fabregas is now above 30 and he came to the club only for £30 million. Yet, Babayaro says that the 3-0 win over Middlesbrough showed the importance of the midfielder and just a 90 minutes. Speaking to Talksport, he said:

“He is an unbelievable player. They are talking about Fabregas going to AC Milan and here and there, but Chelsea should do everything possible to make sure he stays at Chelsea.

“You saw the way he controlled the midfield [against Boro]. He was just unbelievable – picking people out and spraying passes left, right and centre.”

Cesc Fabregas was initially unhappy with his role under Antonio Conte, but he has now been extremely influential in the team. His professional attitude has led to Conte giving as much chances as possible. The game against Middlesbrough saw N’Golo Kante, who was recently named as the PFA Player of the Year, rested in favour of Fabregas. The midfielder did not disappoint, as he controlled the play from the centre of the park. Fabregas’ ability to spot a player also meant that he had a hand in two of the three goals.

Fabregas has now directly created 11 goals for his teammates. Incredibly, he has more assists than any other player in the Manchester United first-team, despite having played very few matches this season. Antonio Conte has largely been using him as an impact player, and it is unlikely to change next season even if Fabregas decides to stay. However, the Spaniard will be confident of getting much more first-team opportunities now with Chelsea back in the Champions League. Lack of European games was a key factor behind Conte being unable to rotate his squad much.

After the recent takeover from Chinese owners, AC Milan are rich on cash and are looking to spend big in the upcoming summer transfer window. Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho is looking to be reunited with Fabregas, who helped him win the league title in his second spell at Chelsea.

Fabregas is currently earning around £170,000 per week at Chelsea. Such high wages could be a stumbling block for Milan.
