‘Do you spend £80million when you have Rashford?’ Owen Urges Man United To Re-consider Signing Of This Superstar

Michael Owen believes Lingard should leave Manchester United.

Striker Michael Owen is no stranger to playing with top players even when he was a youngster. But the former Liverpool and Manchester United forward felt no pressure since he was playing regularly and scoring goals. It is not the same case with Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, who has been unable to get much game time despite his obvious talent. Owen says that United going after Antoine Griezmann will destroy the morale of Rashford. Jose Mourinho is known for signing ready-made first-team players instead of utilising the young players in the squad.

This has often been to the detriment of the youngsters, and Owen does not want Rashford to meet the same fate. He said:

“I think Griezmann is a brilliant player, obviously he is brilliant. What Manchester United must weigh up is, do you spend that £80million when you have Rashford?”

“All of a sudden, for him, you are not sending a great message to pick someone straight ahead of him. At the moment it is perfect for Rashford, because you know you have got Zlatan ahead of him but you haven’t got Zlatan there forever.”

United should be looking for strikers in the market as Zlatan Ibrahimovic is yet to commit his future to the club. Manchester United have heavily been linked with Antoine Griezmann and Andrea Belotti. Both the players would not be available for anything less than £60million but United do not seem unfazed by these demands as they are very much keen on strengthening the forward line-up which will be much weaker without Zlatan Ibrahimovic next season.

Antoine Griezmann

Even though Ibrahimovic’s camp has been speaking in a positive fashion about the recent surgery, it is understood that the striker will be out for at least a year. His cruciate ligament injury remains career threatening and the United are unlikely to go ahead with their plan to keep the Swedish forward for next season. Rooney has already made his mind to leave the club, and is expected to join a Chinese Super League outfit in the summer.

This would leave Rashford and Anthony Martial as the first choice strikers, and Mourinho does not think it is an ideal solution for a club that wants to win every honour. The squad looked more than capable of handling the demands of two games a week for almost the entire campaign, but it has been threadbare in recent weeks due to a spate of injuries and suspensions. These are some of the common problems for players if they are overworked, and Mourinho would want an even bigger squad in order to handle the rigours of next season.

Marcus Rashford

Owen’s voice is unlikely to be heard. Rashford has scored 5 league goals in 29 appearances, while Martial has 4 league goals in 19 appearances.
