Manchester United To Beat Tottenham In The Race For This Celtic Star
Manchester United have received a substantial boost in the race to sign a new defender, as it is reported that Celtic defender Kieran Tierney will favour a move to Old Trafford rather than to White Hart Lane. Spurs are also interested in the defender who has been a revelation this season. The primary reason for Manchester United’s interest seems to be the concerns about the left back position. Even though Luke Shaw appears to be back among Jose Mourinho’s plans, the Portuguese is preparing alternate plans if the 21-year-old leaves this summer. Shaw has been publicly criticised by Mourinho on several occasions this season.
The lack of a regular option in the left back positions has been one of the few disadvantages for Manchester United this season. The club has been extremely strong in the midfield and its central defensive positions, while David de Gea has provided little reason to worry with regard to the goalkeeper. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been able to score goals on a regular basis, while Marcus Rashford has also been amongst the goals of late. Yet, left back continues to be a major problem for the club.
United have been linked with several left backs including Tottenham’s Danny Rose. However, Mourinho is aware that the 26-year-old will cost a huge amount of money considering his form and status at Spurs. Tierney will be a much easier target to pursue in the summer. Even though Celtic have been able to win the Scottish Premier League in record fashion, the club are in a much poor position overall considering that the Scottish league offers little challenge in Europe. Only the Champions League will provide hope for the player.
Manchester United is a different animal compared to Celtic. Hence, it appears that he has made the decision to make the switch to Old Trafford should United come in with a concrete offer. The defender signed a new contract with Celtic less than a year ago. His contract does not run out until the summer of 2021. This places the club in a strong position with regard to fending off interest from any clubs, but Celtic will surely find it difficult to ward off the interest from United.
One of the strong factors behind a potential deal could be Jose Mourinho’s relationship with Brendan Rodgers. The latter may be the Celtic manager, but he learnt his trade under Mourinho. Hence, Celtic would be ready to sell the player to United rather than to Spurs.
There is every possibility of Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, and Luke Shaw departing the club in the summer.
