Juan Mata Undergoes Surgery For Groin Injury

Manchester United star Juan Mata is the latest casualty to join the growing list of injured United players as selection problems begin to mount for manager Jose Mourinho.

The club, on Friday, released a statement regarding Juan Mata’s injury stating that the player had undergone a surgery on his groin and that details will be released soon.

This would be a spot of bother for the Manchester United boss as his team are already light in the midfield department, with Ander Herrera out suspended and Paul Pogba out injured. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are unavailable as well after they were injured during a training session with the English national team. Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be serving a suspension too after his antics against Tyron Mings of Bournemouth.

Manchester United’s statement read: “Juan has had surgery for a groin injury. Further updates on his recovery will follow in due course.”

Juan Mata becomes the 6th Manchester United star to become unavailable for the weekend game. Mourinho would surely be scratching his head regarding the team selection with a number of star players seemingly out of the squad.

However, Jose Mourinho was not in a mood to dwell upon the injuries and suspensions and insisted that the players on the pitch are more important than those who are not available, and he is absolutely right!

Mourinho said in his pre-match press conference:

“We cannot be here crying or speaking about the players who are not available to play. You know Zlatan and Herrera are suspended, you know that Herrera is two matches banned for that episode against Chelsea. You know what happened in the English national team with Smalling and Jones. You know that we have also Pogba injured, but I repeat they’re not important. The important players are the ones that are ready to play and the ones I trust and the ones who are going to give us everything tomorrow to try to keep us in the fight for the top four.”

The boss seems to be confident about the players who are available for selection and this is the right way to go about. With Herrera and Ibrahimovic set to come back after this weekend, the problems would ease a little bit.

We’ll have to wait to see the club’s update on Juan Mata’s surgery. Let’s hope that it isn’t anything too serious.
