Kylian Mbappe has been pushed into the limelight over the last few weeks after his incredible performances against Manchester City in the last 16 stage of the Champions League. However, he came to the centre-stage in the second leg against the English club by scoring the opening goal in the 3-1 win. This proved to be the catalyst behind the success, which saw Monaco progress into the quarter-finals at the expense of Manchester City. The first leg finished as a 5-3 loss for the French club, but recovering sufficiently in the second leg meant that they were able to progress on away goals after a 6-6 aggregate score.

Manchester United have immediately enquired about the availability of Mbappe. Even more stunning is that the club have reportedly made a £69 million offer for the 18-year-old. In many ways, Mbappe has been likened to former French star Thierry Henry. Even though a similar comparison was made between Thierry Henry and United striker Anthony Martial before he made the switch, it is believed that Mbappe is capable of achieving great things in his career. Still just 18 years old, Monaco are aware of the player’s potential. Hence, they have reportedly slapped a figure of £129 million for his signature.

This would comfortably break the world transfer record for a senior player, let alone a teenager. Paul Pogba is the world’s most expensive player after having made the £89 million switch to Manchester United last summer. However, this £129 million demand would comfortably dwarf this figure. It remains to be seen if the two clubs will be able to come to an agreement. Bringing in a new high-quality centre-forward is a priority for United, who are still uncertain about striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic staying at the club.

Wayne Rooney is widely expected to leave the club due to a lack of game time, while Anthony Martial is also expected to face a similar fate with the striker attracting interest from clubs around the world. The prospect of becoming a first-team regular straight away would appeal to Mbappe, who is contracted with the French outfit only until the summer of 2019. This places Monaco in a vulnerable position should the player’s head be turned by the tremendous amount of interest in his signature.

Mbappe has been one of the factors behind Monaco’s rise to the top of the French Ligue 1. He has scored 12 goals in 22 appearances for the French outfit while also contributing 8 assists. United have previously had several transfers with Monaco with Radamel Falcao and Martial being the latest high-profile transfer between the two clubs.
