Bayern’s VC Confirms Manchester United’s Mammoth Bid For Their Goal Poacher

Reports claim that Manchester United made a mammoth bid of £85 million last summer, to sign German International Thomas Muller.

Muller

According to Sky Sports, Bayern Munich executive vice-chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen has revealed that Manchester United launched a bid for Thomas Muller last summer, which was worth £85 million. However, the approach was rejected by Bayern Munich.

When asked if an offer of more than €100 million (£85 million) came from United, Dreesen told Bild (h/t Sky Sports:

“There really was such a thing. Then came a fax from England. For us, however, a sale of Thomas Muller was never discussed. If a player fits us, we would be stupid to give him a short-term prospect of a record profit and to weaken him.”

Muller has had a difficult season in Germany, scoring five goals in all competitions – including just once in 17 Bundesliga games.

Last season, he scored 32 goals in all competitions and it is easy to understand why United bid such a big amount to lure him away from Allianz Arena. However, with Muller struggling for form this season, it will be a question of whether he might draw interest from top clubs again and if Bayern look to hold on to him or not.

Thomas Muller has been remarkably consistent over the years, scoring more than 20 goals a season since 2012/13. He won the world cup with Germany in 2014 and was rated highly by the likes of Thierry Henry, who once said in an interview that Thomas Muller does what the game needs him to do and appreciated the fact that he doesn’t do fancy stuff on the pitch.

Now that Manchester United appear settled with Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front, there is no real desperation at Old Trafford to bring in a player like Thomas Muller. The fact that they’ve sold Depay and kept the No. 7 jersey open so far suggests that United might be looking to bring in a marquee player to fill the place. It is unlikely that the player might be Muller.

It appears as though that the player in pursuit might be Antoine Griezmann. Reports have emerged linking Griezmann with Man United.

While the prospect of signing Muller looks great, Griezmann is the one who would better fit the bill at Old Trafford. Griezmann is more fluid in his gameplay and is younger than Thomas Muller. He has already been nominated for Ballon d’Or and is competing with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for individual and club honours as well.

There is very little possibility that United could come back in for Muller, with Rashford and Martial promising so much for the future and with the club also being linked with other big names in world football.
