“The older I get, the better I get, like red wine” – Manchester United Hero Comments On His Future

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Could Zlatan Ibrahimovic still be terrorising defences in 2031?

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was always expected to bring in some excellent responses to media questions when his move to Manchester United was announced. It has proven to be the case, as Ibrahimovic has already made some famous quotes since coming to Old Trafford. Now, the 35-year-old has compared himself with red wine and says that he gets better with age. Questions have been asking about Ibrahimovic’s ability to continue his good run of form. The brace against West Brom took his league tally to 10 goals in the last nine matches for United.

Much of the 10 games unbeaten run for the Red Devils has been built upon the goals from Ibrahimovic. However, he is clearly not at the peak of his career. Age, though, is only a number according to the striker, who has represented the likes of Barcelona, PSG, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Juventus, as he believes that his mind still works as a 20-year-old. Hence, he thinks that he may be able to play until 50. He said:

“The older I get, the better I get, like red wine. You like red wine? I’m a perfect example of that.

“I’m settling in. I feel happy, I feel good. Even if I’m 35, in my mind I’m 20. I think I could play also at 50, but it’s not down to me. The only thing that surprises me [about the Premier League] is that the game is not controlled.”

Mourinho recently said that he was thinking about giving a break for Ibrahimovic, and it has arrived with an almost 10-day rest period before United play against Sunderland on Boxing Day. He acknowledged a few months ago that Ibrahimovic had to be managed with a lot of care in order to ensure that he was capable of playing in the most number of matches for the club.

Many are already left surprised that Ibrahimovic has been able to keep out Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford from the starting line-up. He was not expected to feature in 16 league matches, and he has only missed the other game because of suspension.

Ibrahimovic may have the mind of a 20-year-old, but there will certainly be signs during the season when age takes a toll on his body. It would not be surprising for a player who has appeared in more than 700 games in his career. Ibrahimovic has been virtually a regular first-team player wherever he has been. A career that started before the 21st century began, Ibrahimovic recently crossed the 700 game mark. He has an astonishing 408 goals in this period, and it is not surprising that he has managed to maintain a ratio of more than a goal every other game.

One of the major issues Ibrahimovic would have to adapt with is the lack of a winter break. A winter break is usually common in every European league but not in England. In fact, the most number of games take place during this period. Ibrahimovic is just about to find this, as United entertain Sunderland on Boxing Day.
