Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil Emerges As A Surprise Target For Manchester United If His Contract Talks Stall

Ozil and Mourinho already have a good relationship since working together at Real Madrid

The second transfer stint of the season is just a couple of months away and it is fair to assume that the managers in England are plying their trade to lure some of the best stars of the industry. The personnel representing their respective clubs did their best during the summer window and for some it worked out pretty well, while there are some, who have failed to get the best out of their players and Manchester United are one of them.

A Whole lot of players are linked with Manchester United, but the most surprising one amongst all of them is the Arsenal Starlet Mesut Ozil. According to the reports from ESPN, via Sun, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is hoping to take a bitter advantage of Mesut Ozil’s contract talks with Arsenal and make a surprise bid for the German maestro.

Ozil is currently Arsenal’s top earner as he earns £140,000-a-week, and if the rumours are to be believed, then United are ready to offer him a contract that is literally hard to reject. The Sun says that United will be willing to offer Ozil a £200,000-a-week contract and with this, we could expect the former Real Madrid man heading towards the Old Trafford.

What makes this deal more interesting is the fact that Ozil had previously rejected Arsenal when he joined Real Madrid back in 2010. According to M.E.N, Arsenal were close to agreeing the terms with Ozil after the 2010 World Cup, but a phone call by Mourinho lured Ozil to Real Madrid by snubbing a move to London.

“They wanted me, especially Mourinho. I spoke with him on the phone and he told me his ideas and what he thought about me as a player,” recalled Ozil.

The move worked pretty well and even the Arsenal manager later admitted that Ozil snubbed Arsenal to join the Los Blancos. Speaking in an interview last year, Wenger said:

“Ozil called me and said ‘sorry, I’ve chosen Real Madrid’. I said ‘OK, I wish you luck’.

“When I heard about the opportunity to get him out of Real Madrid of course I was keen. This time it worked.”

Ozil has only 19 months left in his Arsenal contract and he is reportedly stalling the chances of signing a new deal and that has alerted Manchester United. The German is a player of top quality and the Devils could do much-much better with him alongside.

The Red Devils have been struggling a lot lately, especially in the final third, so a move for Ozil do make sense. Skipper Wayne Rooney isn’t getting any younger and Ozil is always an upgrade for Lingard or Depay. A combination of Mata-Ozil could well work at Old Trafford, but that will surely mean that one of the youngsters will have to find his way out of the club.
