Manchester United have every reason to be worried about the futures of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera. The existing deal of both Spaniards runs out in the summer of 2018. In addition, United are believed to have the option of a further year on their contracts. After having been involved in a raft of new signings over the last couple of summers, United seem to have been more interested in securing the talented youngsters on long-term contracts. Mata and Herrera are at the peak of their careers and any other club would have offered the two players a new deal by now.

There is some good news in the form of United, as the reports are suggesting that United are preparing a contract extension for Herrera. The midfielder was signed by former boss Louis van Gaal for around £30 million from Athletic Bilbao. Since his move in 2014, Herrera has split opinions with his inconsistent performances. In defence of the Spaniard, he has been played in a number of positions already. After struggling to even feature in the team at the start of the campaign, the 27-year-old is now an integral part of Jose Mourinho’s setup in the midfield.

His current contract is reportedly worth around £90,000 per week. The 27-year-old is unlikely to see a major jump in terms of wages, but he could be extremely satisfied with seeing his United contract go beyond the 30th birthday. Any top player would appreciate the possibility of playing for a club like Manchester United, as they receive more exposure which is good for international caps. After struggling in his first couple of years at United, Herrera’s performances in recent weeks have not gone unnoticed. He was recently called up for the Spanish national team by new boss Lopetegui.

United recently extended the contracts of players like Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Marcus Rashford, and Jesse Lingard in his line for the same. However, there seems to have been a disregard for the more experienced players although it is understandable that United did not want to offer contract extensions before Jose Mourinho got a good look at them.

Juan Mata’s future at Old Trafford seemed like in major doubt when Mourinho was announced as the new boss. However, the Spaniard has actually started playing a major role in the proceedings over the last few weeks.

The Red Devils may contemplate the idea of activating the additional year on the contracts of the duo. However, Herrera is likely to seek a new contract that would put him on an elevated status within the squad rather than continue with the existing deal. Herrera is yet to score or assist in the league or Europa League this season, but he has made eight league appearances so far.
