Just as rumours grow about Memphis Depay’s future at Manchester United, his former manager Dick Advocaat says that the winger should be given more time at Old Trafford. Advocaat has seen Depay from close quarters to suggest that the Dutch winger has incredible potential and that it would be wrong for United to make a hasty decision. Depay came through the ranks at PSV Eindhoven before dominating the Dutch league for four years. It persuaded former United manager Louis van Gaal to come up with £25 million in order to secure his signing.

Depay started out well at Old Trafford before falling down the pecking order even when Van Gaal was still the manager. He was expected to get a second lease of life when Jose Mourinho came to the club in the summer. However, he barely has had a look in at the first team and rumours continue to grow about his departure from the club. One of the interested clubs seems to be Fenerbahce, who are managed by none other than Advocaat.

The Turkish club would benefit immensely by bringing in the 22-year-old. Apart from benefiting from the immense talent at his disposal, Fenerbahce can also potentially benefit from a huge profit if they sell him at a later stage.

Advocaat knows extremely well that Depay is unlikely to feature in the United team again barring an incredible set of injuries to the squad. The rise of youngsters like Marcus Rashford makes it difficult for Depay to even consider a place in the first-team. According to ESPN, Advocaat said:

“The potential is there for him to be a good player. You cannot lose that, he has the quality to be a top player, but the problem for him is that there are so many quality players in that squad.

“I still believe in him, he has the right mentality, the right character to play for United, but there are so many options there. Regular playing time will help his progression.”

It was a major surprise that Jose Mourinho not elected to start with the 22-year-old for the Europa league game against Fenerbahce. The youngster has just completed 71 minutes of action in the Europa League and the Premier League.

As he has almost no opportunities to show his quality under Jose Mourinho, it is highly likely that he will leave the club in January. Mourinho has always not been a manager to stick with underperforming players for a long. A great example would be that of Kevin De Bruyne, who was sold from Chelsea without having much of a look in. Fenerbahce, though, could profit heavily with a move for the 22-year-old.

Depay’s best years at PSV came immediately after Advocaat departed the club and it is no coincidence that the youngster had learned a lot from the hugely experienced manager.
