Harry Redknapp Warns Manchester United With Bizarre Claims About Club’s Star Player

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney always seems to be at the end of criticism whenever Manchester United and, to a lesser extent, England are not performing well. As a player with a decade-long history at Old Trafford, one may think that it would not be the case. However, Rooney has once again become a victim at Old Trafford, but this time under Jose Mourinho. After a string of poor results from the team, Mourinho dropped Rooney and this has been met with a sudden increase in positive results. Inadvertently, it has led to suggestions that Rooney is the source of the club’s poor form.

It may not be entirely true, but Rooney has found himself paying the price in the last few weeks. He has been on the bench with midfielder Juan Mata selected in favour. So far, Rooney has been extremely silent on the issue and has respected the manager’s decision completely. Harry Redknapp, though, feels that it is only a matter of time before Rooney starts to voice his opinion about the lack of playing time. Redknapp via Evening Standard column said:

“Wayne Rooney won’t take not playing at Manchester United for much longer. That situation is going to come to a head sooner rather than later if he doesn’t get back in the team.

“At the moment, he says he’s okay with it and wants to fight to prove himself but Jose Mourinho clearly has his concerns about him and if that continues he could go elsewhere, maybe next summer.

“Wayne loves playing football more than anyone I’ve ever seen. I know he earns a fortune but he has always reminded me of a kid in the school ground just wanting to play.”

As an England international who has just announced his retirement after the World Cup 2018, it is vitally important for Rooney that he plays regularly in order to retain his spot in the national team. The last 90 minutes of league action for the 30-year-old was back in the middle of September in the 3-1 shock defeat against Watford. Since then, Rooney has completed just one full game and it was the League Cup fixture against Northampton Town – hardly a testing scenario for the club’s second highest goal scorer.

Mourinho has been keen on managing Rooney throughout his career. However, his wish seems to have been fulfilled at the worst possible time. The strong competition for places coupled with overwhelming pressure from the club to be successful straightaway means that Jose Mourinho has to make some tough decisions with regard to his playing staff. Rooney, undoubtedly, has come out worse than some true underperforming names.

Manchester United go through a tricky period in October, as they have games against the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea in the league along with a game against Manchester City in the League Cup. After having missed almost a month of proper top-level action, Rooney will have to produce something magical – likely in training – in order to bring about a change in the thoughts of Mourinho.

As bizarre as it sounds, Redknapp went even as far as saying that Arsenal or Chelsea should consider signing Rooney if he was to leave Old Trafford. Such a possibility is highly unlikely, as Rooney has already been close to leaving only to be persuaded by the club to stay for longer. The striker has a contract until the 2018-19 season.

“He would be a great signing for a couple of seasons and could have a major impact on a Premier League club. He could tip the balance for a top-four team if United were to let him go. I’d take Wayne at Arsenal or Chelsea and he has to play as a No9 or 10 — midfield isn’t for him yet.”
