Next Carrick? Manchester United Keen On Signing This next Big Thing From Monaco

Tiémoué Bakayoko

Manchester United may seem to have a lot of strength in the midfield positions, but it seems that Jose Mourinho is not entirely happy with his options in this area. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick, and Morgan Schneiderlin are some of the United players capable of playing in this position. However, they clearly do not seem to fit in the plans of the manager. Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini, and Ander Herrera are the chief options left at the disposal of Mourinho.

Despite having spent more than £150 million in the summer, it seems that the club may be set for a couple of signings in January with the defensive midfield position set for improvement. According to French magazine Le10 Sport, United have been in touch with Monaco over the signing of their 22-year-old midfielder Tiémoué Bakayoko. Bakayoko has caught the eyes of United scouts and he backed up the interest by delivering a stellar performance in the 3-1 win over Paris St Germain at the start of the campaign.

Apparently, United are not showing interest in the defensive midfielder on the back of one performance. They have reportedly been watching him for almost a year and a decision could be made either in January in the summer. United appear to be facing a lot of struggles with regard to shipping out Schweinsteiger, the summer may be an ideal time to expect Bakayoko at United. He has been likened with Chelsea’s midfielder N’Golo Kante.

Bakayoko shares many of his attributes with Kante and he is known for immense work rate coupled with the ability to bring his teammates into play by dispossessing the opposition. Mourinho has been allowing Pogba in a more advanced position over the last few games to great success. If the Portuguese retain the Frenchman in this position, a top quality ball winning midfielder is of great priority. Bakayoko seems to fit the bill perfectly in this regard, but just like with Radamel Falcao, United may have to spend a significant sum of money.

Ironically, United reportedly developed a good relationship with Monaco during the transfer of Falcao. It may be crucial in fending off interest from other clubs.

The club have shown that they are not afraid to spend huge sums of money in order to bring back the glory days. Even if Bakayoko costs in excess of £40 million, United will sign him if the final process of scouting also goes in favour of the youngster.

Bakayoko was a first-team regular in the Monaco team until his red card in the game against Nice a few weeks back. He is yet to appear in any game in October, but his age and quality mean that would not be long before manager Leonardo Jardim brings him back to the first-team.
