Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is set to make some drastic changes to the squad he inherited from Louis Van Gaal. Mourinho has already completed the signing of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan so far and is now looking to let go some players who may not fit his plasn for the next season.
Reports suggest that Mourinho has deemed Juan Mata, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Bastian Schweinsteiger surplus to requirements and is set to sell the players off.
Juan Mata joined United for a club-record transfer fee of £37.1million in 2014 from Chelsea wherein Mourinho himself had sold him to United sighting concerns regarding the player’s stamina, pace and defensive contribution.
While Marcos Rojo was Van Gaal’s €20m signing from Sporting, a deal which included a free loan of former United player Nani on a heavily subsided wages.
The Argentina international – acquired on the strength of his 2014 World Cup performances, but failed to command a guaranteed starting place either at left or centre back, ultimately being reduced to 16 league appearances last season.
Schweinsteiger was let go by Bayern Munich due to concerns regarding the player’s failing physique,he struggled to make 82 Bundesliga starts in the four seasons that he spent at Munich and made only 13 Premier League starts for United this summer. Further, Munich also wanted an out from the player’s high wages.
Mourinho’s lack of belief on Daley Blind will see the player leave the United this summer. The £15m purchase from Ajax, Blind formed an impressive partnership with Smalling last year, but Mourinho does not believe the Netherlands international possesses the physical stature to be a first-choice in his defence and is well down a hierarchy of central midfielders.
