Why Manchester United Should Dodge The Bullet With This 21-year-old Derby Star

Will Hughes1

The newly appointed manager of the Devils is surely going to face one of the toughest task of his career as he has a  burden of bringing Manchester United back on the winning ways.

He had to face a downtime last season with Chelsea as the Blues came out to be the worst defending champions ever. But to be honest, Jose cannot be blamed alone. Yes, a manager does play an important role team’s thick and thin, but even their star midfielder Cesc Fabregas confessed that it was majorly the players’ fault. Now with a job of Manchester United in hand, the 53-year-old will be looking to continue his glory, but now with the Reds.

The Portuguese man hasn’t wasted a single minute so far in the market as he has already acquired Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and, that Mkhitaryan. Signing three world class players even with a Champions League qualification is not easy, but Mourinho did that in style. Beside those three names, Sky Sports have reported that Jose Mourinho is close to sign the Mexican sensation Hirving Lozano, who plays as a winger.

Now, besides those, a new name has been popped out from nowhere and according to Sky Sports Jose Mourinho is currently tracking the 21-year-old Derby midfielder, Will Hughes. The 21-year-old English under 21 international has made 122 appearances for Derby so far and if the rumours are to be believed, then United will bring the talent at the Old Trafford in the coming weeks.

The Sun has stated that a fee of around £7m is what Derby County will be demanding from the Devils. Hughes started his footballing career with Derby itself and made his senior debut for the team back in September 2011. He struggled to mark his name in the first team squad, but just in the following season, he got the place in the starting XI.

Will-Hughes

The 21-year-old is quite a versatile player as he can operate the game as a central midfielder, as a defensive midfielder or as a left winger. Unlike many youngsters in the industry, Hughes’ game is based on creating chances. The players himself stated that he bases his game with the likes of Xavi and Andres Iniesta. But is this player a correct choice for the club?

Well, to be perfectly honest, we think that Manchester United do not really need another player, who is quite good in creating chances. As observed from the last season, United were amongst those best clubs, who created numerous chances, but they sincerely lacked the end product. What Jose Mourinho need is a proven goal scorer and signing Ibrahimovic is just a first step of this.

Besides that, the 21-year-old might not get a regular game time as we all are aware of the fact that Mourinho does not have a great record while dealing with the youngsters. His game time will surely hinder at Old Trafford as they already have Michael Carrick, who recently renewed his contract. Besides Carrick, they have Schneiderlin who can be a perfect holding midfielder for the side in the coming season and in the central midfield, United have the likes of Wayne Rooney, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ander Herrera and sometimes, Mkhitaryan can also be used there. Besides that, Hughes is not the most prolific figure in front of the goal, in fact, he rarely scores. During his five years of tenure with the side, he has scored just 10 goals. As I’ve stated earlier that what United need is a proven goal scorer, not someone who could create chances, because they already have the players for that.

There are no doubts about his abilities, but looking at the current United squad, there is no space for him at the moment. He is just 21 years of age and still has made 128 appearances for the side. So we do think that it will be a good option for the player to stay with Derby or move to a mid table club from where he can take his career forward.
