Talking Tactics: How Would Manchester United Lineup With Sergio Busquets In The Team?

The Manchester United midfield has been at the heart of a lot of problems, and it needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Although the club has bought in the likes of Ander Herrera, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, yet none of them have had the desired impact so far. At the moment, United need a replacement for Michael Carrick, who is now 34 years old and is slowing facing the inevitable slump in form. Although one could suggest several replacements for the position, yet we doubt if one could find a better candidate than Sergio Busquets. The Spaniard has been at the heart of Barcelona’s all-conquering midfield for more than 5 years now, and still going strong. He has won it all, several times over but still continues to play with as much hunger and passion as an 18-year-old kid making his debut.

The possible lineup:

I, personally, would like to see Busquets being utilised in a 3 man midfield for United, just like he is employed in Catalunya. Ander Herrera and Morgan Schneiderlin could be put in alongside him, and that would closely replicate the current Barca midfield of Busquets, Iniesta and Rakitic, not in terms of ability but in terms of tactical flexibility. Sergio would play the role of a deep-lying playmaker who has the ability of regaining possession and picking accurate passes while Morgan would be the hard tackling no-nonsense midfielder and Herrera would make those clever forward darts with the ball. Upfront, a 3 man forward line of Martial, Rooney and Lingard would do the trick while the 4 man backline would consist of Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Borthwick-Jackson and Matteo Darmian.

Transfer feasibility: 6/10

It is unlikely that Barcelona would let go of someone whom the great Del Bosque described as ” the lynchpin ” of the 4-3-3 system, someone whose work goes unnoticed but someone without whom the system would never work. Let’s see though, with the right price, nothing is impossible in the market these days!
