Manchester United have spent liberally in the last 18 months since their current manager’s arrival at Old Trafford, but the recruitment policy hasn’t been an outright success. £250m, or thereabouts, has been invested and Manchester United still look far from convincing.
And the boss still wants more and it is even true as still after such investments the team is not at all performing to what it is expected of. And his recent public utterances have suggested that he wants to sign top wide players. But with the likes of Rooney and Schweinsteiger on the way of decline, the spine is the area of the team most in need of investment.
DEFENCE – JOHN STONES
Chris Smalling has done really well at the back this season but the constant chopping and changing in defence hasn’t helped the team. Furthermore, question marks remain over the long term quality and fitness of Phil Jones. If Manchester United want to make a Rio Ferdinand style signing – someone who can stay in the team for a decade – then John Stones surely has to be a man. The Toffees centre back is surely going to be tempted by some of the biggest clubs in the world in the next couple of years and why not United?
It’s no secret that United need to bolster their defensive ranks. To give them credit where it is due, they have looked a much more solid unit at the back this season but they still need to bring in a new centre-half for several reasons.
Firstly, Daley Blind is not a natural centre-half and there is no way van Gaal sees it as a long-term position for his compatriot. Secondly, injuries are inevitable over the course of a season. If Blind or Smalling are ruled out for some length of time, United need better players than Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo or Paddy McNair to come into the side.
