The Former Real Madrid Or Barcelona Man: Why Anything Will Do For Manchester United At The Moment

Louis Van Gaal is in big trouble as Manchester United stumbled to another loss against Norwich City on Saturday. The loss meant United are now without a win in 6 games in all competitions. They now sit 9 points behind leaders Leicester City. That shows there has basically been no improvement in the last 2 years. They might be dominating the ball in each game, but they’re not dominating the games. There is no point of having 60% possession if you don’t do anything useful with it. United have only scored 10 Premier League goals at Old Trafford this season; no other ground has seen fewer goals. They’ve taken a total of 131 shots in the league which puts them in 18th place. When you look at the number of chances created, they’re in the bottom 3 again. Something has got to change for Man United.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the futures of Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho, and it seems to be that LVG’s United tenure might be coming to an end.

Pep Guardiola?

With Bayern Munich confirming that Carlo Ancelotti will take over at the end of the season, there have been a lot of rumours linking Pep Guardiola to Man United. There’s no doubt that Guardiola understands the traditions and expectations of managing a club with such a great history. He has expressed his admiration for the atmosphere at Old Trafford in the past. Guardiola’s teams have a very aesthetically pleasing style of play; the kind United fans are desperate to see once again. Unlike Van Gaal who is stubborn in his ways, Pep is much more innovative.

His Bayern team are scoring for fun at times and that’s what United needs at the moment. His record speaks for itself, at Barcelona as well as Bayern. Like Louis Van Gaal, Guardiola does like promoting youth players. He gave debuts to around 22 youth players when he was at Barcelona. He too believes in the philosophy of keeping the ball however, it doesn’t compromise on the number of goals being scored. During his 4 year tenure at Barcelona, he turned them into the best team in the world. They controlled games consistently and they moved the ball with purpose.

Sir Alex Ferguson himself claimed after the 2011 Champions League Final that was the best team he had ever faced. Manchester United must target Pep Guardiola as it will be a big loss if he ends up joining one of their Premier League rivals. The only downside is that they will have to wait till the end of the season. That means they have to either continue with the struggling Van Gaal or give it to the inexperienced Ryan Giggs till the end of the season.

Jose Mourinho?

Jose Mourinho has had a disastrous season. From Champions of England, to languishing just a few places above the relegation zone. With United struggling, a lot of fans have called for Jose to be appointed as the new manager. However, what they don’t realize is that Jose’s teams don’t play the brand of attacking football that they want to see. Yes, he is a winner and has an absolutely incredible record but at the end of the day, United will still not be back to playing the United way.

Another negative is that he will not be long term. He has two highly successful seasons, but invariably leaves after the third. For many fans at the moment, it seems anything will do apart from Louis Van Gaal. Not only does Sir Alex hold Jose Mourinho in very high regard, he knows what’s needed to be successful in England. Mourinho also might have a point to prove to his previous employers and that makes him even hungrier for success.

Van Gaal has spent a lot of money in his 18 months in charge and the team is no better off than when he took over. Things have got to change. United should not miss out on signing either Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho. It seems very likely that Pep might end up at City if United are unable to sign him and that will be a big loss for United.
