Projected Manchester United Lineup To Start Against West Brom: Young In The Side, Rooney To Lead The Attack

United finally broke their goal drought as they beat CSKA Moscow 1-0. United produced a much better performance than their previous outing against Crystal Palace, however they still struggled to find the back of the net. It was no surprise that they dominated possession, but for once they had quite a few attempts as well. CSKA had a massive chance to go ahead as Seydou Doumbia was played through but was denied by the terrific efforts of David De Gea and Chris Smalling. United fans made their feelings evident as they chanted ‘Attack Attack Attack’ throughout the game.

The problem for United is that they create so few chances, that they can’t let them slide. Once they score the first, it is easier to score a second and third as teams push for an equalizer. However, it’s scoring that first goal that has been the major problem off-late.

United are at home to West Brom in the League on Saturday. They have a pretty solid home record this season being one of the only two teams to be undefeated at home along with Tottenham. Also, they’ve kept 7 clean sheets so far, the most in the League. Bastian Schweinsteiger has done a good job after the abysmal outing at the Emirates. However, he is aging now and after having started against Palace in the League and CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, it is likely that he will be rested for this one. In most games he’s normally been substituted on the hour mark for Michael Carrick however he lasted almost the full ninety against CSKA, being replaced by Herrera in the 89th minute. This is subject to Morgan Schneiderlin’s fitness of course. He missed the Champions League game due to illness and although he did train today, LVG did indicate they would wait and see.

Jesse Lingard was one of United’s best players on the pitch against CSKA. The major problem with his play though was the lack of end product and hence he would lose the ball. While he did well, I think Herrera might be brought back in his place. Although everyone wants to see Martial play up front, he had a pretty average game. This might tempt Van Gaal to move him back to the left allowing Rooney to play up top with Herrera as the number 10. The fact that Rooney scored might also influence LVG’s decision.

The remainder of the team should keep their place. With Darmian suspended after picking up his 5th yellow card of the season, Young will continue at right-back. Phil Jones is fully fit, however Daley Blind has done a good job in his absence and deserves to keep his place. Michael Carrick is being made to watch from the bench in recent games but he put in a good performance on Tuesday. He should keep his place too, especially with Morgan Schneiderlin being uncertain due to illness and fatigue for Bastian Schweinsteiger.
