Manchester United send a touching message to former manager Louis van Gaal after prostate cancer diagnosis.

After the midweek loss against PSV and Luke Shaw’s horrific injury, Manchester United head into the clash against Southampton on Sunday hoping to carry the momentum shown on the domestic front. Last week’s 3-1 thumping of Liverpool would give the Reds confidence and see them maintain the form and avenge last season’s league double inflicted on them by the Saints.

Luke Shaw’s double leg fracture would mean van Gaal will have to choose between either of Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Ashley Young.

On being asked about the left back dilemma, he said, “That is not any problem I think, but Shaw is the line-up player. I have already said that it is very difficult to replace him, certainly when he is in such good shape. But we have good replacements in Blind, Rojo and in Ashley Young.”

The return of captain Wayne Rooney would be timely boost to a goals-starved United.

Predicted Manchester United lineup

Goalkeeper

Having sorted out his future for atleast this season, David de Gea is United’s undisputed No.1 and should start in goal, after a solid comeback against Liverpool.

Defence

With Luke Shaw out, van Gaal would have a few options to fill in at left back. Marcos Rojo should pip Daley Blind there, given his obvious discomfort in the centre against PSV and where his pace would give an advantage. Blind and Smalling have built an understanding in the centre, which has been the basis for United’s steady defensive start to the season. Matteo Darmian retains his place.

Midfield

Bastian Schweinsteiger could be in for a duly needed rest, after starting United’s last three games, which would allow Morgan Schneiderlin to have a go in his old hunting ground, with Carrick taking up the passing duties. Juan Mata’s indifferent form off late could see the Spaniard replaced by the energy and industry of Ander Herrera, with Ashley Young on the right and Memphis Depay on the left.
Striker

With Wayne Rooney fit and training, he should start.  Anthony Martial’s impressive start to life at Old Trafford should see him start on the bench and he, along with James Wilson, would offer different options from the bench.
