Finally the inevitable has happened at Old Trafford. Manchester United have disposed of the services of David Moyes which will come as no surprise to any of us given the shambolic season the Red Devils have endured. However, the intrigue will come in the selection of his successor.
It has been confirmed that United and Premier League legend Ryan Giggs will be taking charge on a temporary basis for the remainder of the campaign. Giggs would be the sentimental choice given the plaudits and adulation he receives from the red half of Manchester.
However, now is not the right time for the 40-year-old to be given the top job at United. Giggs has no experience in a management role, and this is imperative for the next United manager because of the rebuilding job that is required ahead of next season. Moyes spent 11 years at Everton and even he was quite frankly out of his league when it came to managing the reigning champions.
Granted, Giggs would have the utmost respect from the players and their last four games are all very winnable. If he can muster some exciting performances with a high point’s total, then rumours will soon spread for the former Welsh international to be given the job on a full-time basis.
At present, his best bet would be to take the assistant manager’s role and learn from the main man in the hot seat.
United should be looking for a manager with experience in the Champions League and one who has enjoyed high levels of success. United have become so accustomed to the feeling of winning – they need somebody to inject the satisfaction of glory back into the Theatre of Dreams. However Giggs is not the answer.
