United To Face Leeds In Carling Cup

Manchester United face a exciting trip to rivals Leeds United in the third round of the Carling Cup.

The tie was arguably the pick of the third round draw (which was made on Saturday) and a familiar journey across the Pennines awaits in store for the United fans, who will no doubt relish the chance to go back to Elland Road again.

It will be a great chance for United’s younger plays to prove themselves again on a big occasion and there’s no doubt the atmosphere on the game will certainly challenge them to perform well. Leeds will certainly be up for it and will want to repeat the success they had the last time the two clubs met, in cup compeititon two seasons ago.

Back then a weakend and lacklustre United side fell to a suprising 1-0 defeat to the Yorkshireman who were then a League Ones side at Old Trafford in the third round of the FA Cup, thanks to a first-half Jermaine Beckford winner.

Amazingly partly due to Leeds dropping out of the Premier League at the end of the 2003/2004 season, it has been almost 8 years since United last beat their great rivals, with that win coming ironically in a third round Carling Cup tie at Elland Road. In a hard-fouht game United won 3-2 after extra time with goals coming from David Bellion, Diego Forlan and Eric Djemba-Djemba.

There’s no doubt that the game which is scheduled to take place in the week starting September 19th is certainly one that will be an important game and with United having a good record in the competition in recent years, it’s one that they and more importantly the fans will not want to lose.
