Could John O’Shea Really Be Off To Arsenal

Over the last fortnight or so, there’s been one player linked with a transfer between us and Arsenal and that player (if you didn’t know it already) is Samir Nasri who if you believe the gossip being reported wants out of London after three trophyless years.

Today however The Mirror are reporting that Arsenal are interested in buying John O’Shea due to Arsene Wenger’s side short on experience at the back, which over the last couple of years has been one of the reasons why they have not secured any silverware.

Arsenal has we know play a terrific brand of football that for a number of reasons over the last couple of years has not produced results where it’s mattered, but that’s football for you.

For reasons probably that no-one out of Arsenal’s hierarchy will know, Wenger has not splashed the cash when he’s had the chance and this summer is facing up to the prospect of a couple of big-name players leaving the club.

Whilst there’s no doubt that John would be a great signing for Arsenal, despite some of the shock responses being made by some Gooners in response to today’s rumour like ‘why would we want a United reject,’ there are probably better candidates that Arsenal could explore than John.

Defenders such as Gary Cahill and Christopher Samba would probably be the two defenders who Arsenal fans would want to see at the Emirates and to be fair to them, they are players who are improving by the year. John after last year it would be fair to say is not the player that he was due to injury.

Whilst there’s no doubt he’d be a good signing for Arsenal to help their youngsters and be a good squad member should they as expected sign one of Cahill or Samba, after not being a first choice for us for a number of years at this stage of his career John needs to play games.

At Arsenal he wouldn’t be a first choice so if there is any truth in this story I doubt he’ll move to the Emirates as why would he want to move to a club who are unlikely to challenge for major trophies next season.

That being said a move to London would be a challenge for John to go down and prove people wrong and help a team who hasn’t won anything in six years get some silverware.

Saying all that though a move to Steve Bruce’s Sunderland looks likely for our no.22 as it’s rumoured that Sir Alex Ferguson agreed to sell the Irishman, along with Wes Brown and Darron Gibson, to the Black Cats last month.

Sunderland could be one of the surprises of the upcoming season as former United captain Steve Bruce has spent well so far and has used some of the money the Wearsiders received when the sold Darren Bent and Jordan Henderson to finance some exciting signings so far.

Craig Gardner and Sebastian Larrson have joined from Bruce’s old club Birmingham City and other good young signings have been made in Ipswich’s Connor Wickham and Coventry City’s highly-rated Irish keeper Craig Westwood. Ji Dong-Won a Korean striker has also been signed and Sunderland will hope to really kick on next season.

Whomever O’Shea goes to three things will be guaranteed.

Firstly His new club will be signing a player who will not let them down. Secondly his place in Ireland’s defence will not come under any danger and lastly the United fans will never forget him, as he has proven to be one of the club’s most popular ‘underrated’ players over the last decade or so.
